Chinese, Ecuadorian Presidents Hold Talks in Beijing

Summary

President Xi Jinping and Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa held talks at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on the afternoon of August 18. Noboa is on a state visit to China. The meeting came as the two countries mark the 10th anniversary of their comprehensive strategic partnership.

Xi called for consolidating political trust and continuing mutual understanding and support on issues concerning each other's core interests and major concerns. Noboa said China is an important partner and friend of Ecuador. The two leaders witnessed the signing of multiple cooperation documents covering green industry, economic and trade cooperation, digital economy and people's livelihood.

Commentary

The China-Ecuador free trade agreement, which took effect in May 2024, eliminates tariffs on over 90 percent of tariff lines gradually. Ecuador exports shrimp, bananas and minerals to China, while Chinese investment flows into energy and infrastructure projects. For New Zealand SMEs, China's infrastructure expansion across Latin America offers subcontracting opportunities in port and power projects, with engineering consultancy and cold-chain logistics particularly promising.

Ecuadorian shrimp entering China could intensify competition in the food sector, but given the low overlap with New Zealand's dairy, meat and kiwifruit exports, the direct impact remains limited. As China expands its free trade network, it may diversify sourcing, prompting New Zealand exporters to strengthen sustainable certification and brand differentiation. With China and Ecuador signing cooperation documents on green industry and digital economy, New Zealand's agriculture emissions reduction and digital agriculture technologies could explore third-market collaboration in Latin America.
