Commentary

Ecuador, the world's top banana exporter and a major shrimp supplier, shipped over 300,000 tonnes of shrimp to China in 2024. The deepening of the China-Ecuador FTA is likely to encourage Chinese buyers to increase purchases of white shrimp, bananas, and other farm goods from Ecuador. While this does not directly replace New Zealand's dairy or meat exports, China's effort to diversify its import sources could erode New Zealand's pricing leverage in certain agricultural sectors.

Small and medium-sized New Zealand businesses should keep an eye on Ecuador's logistics expansion in the Asia-Pacific. The port of Guayaquil is adding cold-chain capacity, which may boost the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of direct shipments of South American produce to China via Pacific routes. At the same time, as China's gateway to investment in Latin America, Ecuador presents opportunities for New Zealand engineering consultancies and agritech firms to participate in tenders for local infrastructure or aquaculture projects, rather than being viewed only as a rival.

Once the upgraded China-Ecuador FTA takes effect, over 90 percent of Ecuador's exports to China will be tariff-free. That sets a benchmark for New Zealand: unless it secures equally favourable or better terms in the China-New Zealand FTA upgrade, its horticultural exports such as kiwifruit and avocados could see market share in China diluted by South American supplies.
