China's 'No.1 warship' decommissioned after 30 years

Summary

The Type 052 guided-missile destroyer Harbin, hull number 112, was formally decommissioned on August 28 at a naval port in Qingdao. Nicknamed "China's No.1 warship",

it served for more than three decades, sailing over 400, 000 nautical miles and completing more than 100 major missions,

including visits to 22 ports in 20 countries. The vessel will be permanently berthed in Changsha, Hunan province, as a national defence education base.

Commentary

The retirement of the Harbin underscores the pace of China's naval modernisation and the shifting maritime security landscape in the Asia-Pacific. For New Zealand SMEs reliant on shipping lanes, increased naval activity could lead to higher insurance costs,

although Chinese escort missions have helped reduce piracy risks on some key routes. Exporters are advised to assess route resilience and diversify logistics hubs.
