Commentary

Spot quotes for New Zealand radiata pine logs at China's Xinminzhou Port show significant price differences across specifications, with P40 reaching 11 while 4m KIS is just 6. China is New Zealand's largest log export market, importing about 20 million cubic metres a year, more than 70 percent of New Zealand's log exports. China's property downturn has weakened demand for construction timber, but demand for industrial timber such as packaging and furniture remains relatively stable, with small and medium-sized sawmills more focused on lower-grade logs.

New Zealand exporters should note that Chinese log inventories remain high and slower port turnover could affect cash flow. At the same time, competition from Australia and European spruce is intensifying; NZ SMEs are advised to hedge price volatility risk by locking in long-term contracts or shifting to higher-grade customised timber.
