Summary
New Zealand's two main ports reported a marked year-on-year fall in national log export volumes, weighed down by soaring fuel costs and ongoing geopolitical conflict. Napier Port, the key gateway for the southern North Island, recorded total log exports of 2.622 million tonnes for the latest financial year, down 2.8 percent year on year, with only a 4.4 percent uptick in the final quarter. Chief executive Todd Dawson said total bulk cargo throughput fell this year as log exports declined and cement and petroleum product imports contracted.
Container channels performed relatively better, with wood and paper product shipments lifting full-year dry container exports 3.3 percent year on year, partly offset by a slight fall in pulp exports, leaving total container throughput broadly flat on the prior year. Tauranga, the country's largest port, reported log exports of 5.8 million tonnes in the year to June, down 8.1 percent year on year, noting that the Iran conflict pushed up fuel costs and prompted many exporters to cut harvesting in the second half of the financial year. The industry widely expects the Middle East conflict to keep fuel prices elevated in the near term, sustaining pressure on forestry, an export sector heavily reliant on diesel.
Scott Downs, head of a New Zealand forestry body, said a stronger renminbi in August significantly boosted the purchasing power of Chinese log buyers, with 1.618 million cubic metres of New Zealand logs arriving at Chinese ports in August 2026, up 23.1 percent year on year and about 300,000 cubic metres more than a year earlier. But Downs said that over the longer term, as China's domestic plantation timber output is gradually released, its demand for imported softwood logs may steadily narrow. New Zealand's domestic sawn timber market is enjoying its strongest winter demand in years, with new residential building consents rising sharply year on year.
In September, most local processors scrapped a previously imposed 2 percent fuel surcharge on sawn timber, while ex-mill prices had been slated to rise by an average of 5 percent. Downs said that even with demand recovering, sawmill optimism remains clearly constrained, as persistent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East leave the industry cautious about uncertainty over fuel and other input costs.
Commentary
New Zealand's log exports face dual pressures. On one side, the Middle East conflict is driving up fuel costs and directly squeezing forestry export margins, with Tauranga's log exports down 8.1 percent year on year and Napier Port also falling 2.8 percent, forcing exporters to scale back harvesting. On the other, China, New Zealand's largest log buyer, is gradually releasing its domestic plantation output, which may narrow long-term demand and poses a structural challenge for a forestry sector dependent on a single market.
In the short term, a stronger renminbi has spurred Chinese buying, with August arrivals up 23.1 percent year on year, but that boost is unlikely to offset longer-term cost and demand concerns. For New Zealand's small and medium-sized business owners, particularly those in forestry, the focus should be on China's plantation substitution trend and on diversifying export markets or shifting toward higher-value wood products. At the same time, the domestic sawn timber market is recovering on higher residential consents, and some processors have removed fuel surcharges, though cost uncertainty still weighs on industry confidence.
New Zealand forestry needs to seek breakthroughs in cost control and market diversification to weather the twin shocks of geopolitics and shifting demand.

Summary in Chinese |
