Summary
China and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) co-hosted an aquaculture side event in Rome on 8 September local time to promote sustainable aquaculture. China said it will deepen cooperation with the FAO, share practical technologies, expand talent training and support industry development. Representatives from major aquaculture nations including India, New Zealand, South Africa, Tunisia and Sierra Leone, as well as international organisations such as the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA), were invited to attend and give presentations.
After the event, several speakers told China News Service they positively assessed China's role. NACA Director-General Leano told China News Service that NACA has long promoted cooperation between China and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region on sustainable fisheries development, and welcomed China's active role in driving aquaculture forward across the region. Leano said aquaculture in the Asia-Pacific has made significant progress and leads the world, but some countries in the region still need support from others to develop their aquaculture industries.
China plays a constructive role in this regard, and NACA relies on China's help to formulate and implement cooperation plans, such as transferring new technologies under development to NACA member countries. He said China's fisheries technology is relatively advanced and it has achieved many innovations in aquaculture that can help relevant countries further develop their fisheries industries, promote sustainable fisheries development and achieve win-win outcomes. He revealed that the two sides have also made progress in technical exchanges and technology transfer in related fields.
Commentary
China's push for sustainable aquaculture cooperation at the FAO underscores its global leadership in aquaculture. China accounts for more than 60 percent of global aquaculture production, and its technology exports and talent training will accelerate industrial upgrading in the Asia-Pacific. New Zealand's aquaculture is dominated by high-value species such as green-lipped mussels and king salmon, with annual output valued at about NZ$400 million, but it faces limited farming space and environmental pressures.
Chinese technology transfer could bring low-cost, efficient farming solutions, but New Zealand should focus more on differentiated competition in high-value products. At the same time, China's cooperation with NACA could influence regional aquatic trade standards, and New Zealand small and medium-sized enterprises need to adapt early to potential new rules. Aquaculture growth in the Asia-Pacific will intensify international market competition, but rising demand for sustainably certified products offers opportunities for New Zealand.

Summary in Chinese |
Commentary in Chinese |
