Trina Solar supplies modules for NSW's first green hydrogen-ammonia plant

Summary

Trina Solar will supply Vertex N-type modules with N-type i-TOPCon technology for GEGHA, New South Wales' first green hydrogen-ammonia project. The 27MW solar farm is expected to produce 200 tonnes of hydrogen and 4,500 tonnes of low-carbon ammonia annually. Zhou Zhichao, Trina Solar's head of Australia and New Zealand, said the project demonstrates solar power's key role in enabling the green hydrogen-ammonia industry.

GEGHA project manager Joe Cumming said the project aims to explore a commercial demonstration model for distributed hydrogen fertiliser.

Commentary

Trina Solar has entered Australia's first green hydrogen-ammonia project, supplying 27MW of N-type TOPCon modules to test solar-powered hydrogen production for low-carbon ammonia fertiliser. As competition intensifies globally in the PV module market, Trina is leveraging its N-type technology to move into distributed hydrogen applications, aiming to differentiate itself in the Australia-New Zealand market. New Zealand SMEs should weigh two aspects.

First, local agriculture depends heavily on imported urea; if distributed green ammonia proves economic in Australia, it could encourage local low-carbon fertiliser alternatives and reduce supply-chain vulnerability to carbon border tariffs. Second, Chinese high-efficiency modules are increasingly winning Australian and New Zealand clean-energy contracts, so local installers and EPCs must balance the order-winning strength of top-tier brands against supplier concentration risk. GEGHA's annual output of 200 tonnes of hydrogen and 4,500 tonnes of ammonia remains modest, and commercial viability still hinges on progress in green power costs and electrolyser efficiency.

At this stage, it is more prudent to monitor replication costs in remote farms than to commit heavy investment.
