Li Qiang Holds Talks with Ecuadorian President Noboa

Summary

Premier Li Qiang met Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on August 19. Marking the 10th anniversary of the China-Ecuador comprehensive strategic partnership, Li said China is ready to work with Ecuador to advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, implement the China-Ecuador free trade agreement,

and deepen cooperation in emerging fields such as 5G and artificial intelligence. Noboa said Ecuador is committed to unlocking the benefits of the free trade agreement and deepening cooperation in trade, mining, renewable energy and other areas.

Commentary

The meeting underscores China's expanding free trade network in Latin America, with Ecuador playing a key role. Ecuador supplies about a quarter of global banana exports, and its shrimp exports to China have grown rapidly. With tariff reductions now in effect, Ecuador's price competitiveness is set to strengthen further.

As China diversifies agricultural imports, New Zealand's traditional market share in dairy, meat and fruit faces increasing competition. At the same time, Chinese investment in 5G, AI and mining in Ecuador could create supporting opportunities for New Zealand SMEs in agritech, mine services and digital infrastructure. New Zealand exporters should defend niche segments through differentiated quality and enhanced cold-chain services.
