China's top legislator Zhao Leji meets Thai PM Anutin

Summary

Zhao Leji, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee,

met with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul in Beijing on the morning of 20 July 2026. Both sides pledged to implement the consensus reached by their leaders, strengthen exchanges between legislative bodies,

and advance the building of a China-Thailand community with a shared future. Anutin reaffirmed Thailand's adherence to the one-China principle.

Commentary

Recent high-level exchanges between China and Thailand have been frequent, with deeper legislative cooperation helping to advance the shared future community. New Zealand businesses should note that Thailand, as the second-largest economy in ASEAN, is leveraging projects such as the China-Thailand railway to emerge as a regional logistics hub. This could boost Thai exports of tropical fruits and rice to China, potentially squeezing market share for similar New Zealand products.

At the same time, Thailand's integration into China's supply chains offers opportunities for NZ firms to tap into ASEAN markets via the RCEP network. Collaborative areas such as digital economy and electric vehicles may generate demand for technical services.
