China, Egypt Journalists Tour Belt and Road Projects

Summary

A joint media interview covering high-quality Belt and Road cooperation between China and Egypt took place in Egypt from 23 to 27 August. The group, comprising nearly 30 journalists, experts and scholars from People's Daily, Egypt's Al-Ahram and other outlets, visited Cairo, Ain Sokhna and Ismailia. They toured key projects including the China-Egypt TEDA Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone, the Central Business District in the New Administrative Capital, Geely's Egypt plant, Haier's Egypt Eco-park and the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University.

Reporting emphasised achievements in localisation and technology transfer, such as Jushi Egypt's localisation rate exceeding 95 percent and the second phase of Haier's Eco-park starting production in October this year. By 31 August, the two countries' media had published nearly 50 reports, with the aim of renewing traditional friendship and deepening exchanges and cooperation.

Commentary

The joint media interview highlights industrial localisation outcomes: Jushi Egypt's localisation rate exceeds 95 percent, Haier's second phase comes on stream in October, and Geely is aiming for regional manufacturing. Egypt's strategic position on the Suez Canal makes it a gateway for Chinese manufacturing to reach Africa and the Middle East. For New Zealand SMEs, one angle is supply chain shifts: Chinese capacity moving west may erode traditional low-cost advantages, but Egypt's rising manufacturing capability will create new export competition, particularly in appliances and auto parts.

Another angle is market opportunity: Chinese-backed projects are driving infrastructure and consumption upgrades in Egypt, providing NZ construction technology, agritech and specialty foods with a gateway into North Africa. Notably, deepening cooperation could change trade route priorities, affecting logistics timings and costs on the Suez Canal. Since Haier's new capacity targets European and African markets, importers in similar categories should assess potential channel conflicts early.
