Fujian, New Zealand Trade Bodies Sign Cooperation Agreement in Fuzhou

Summary

The Fujian-New Zealand Trade and Economic Cooperation Exchange Meeting was held in Fuzhou on the morning of 9 May, hosted by the Fujian Council for the Promotion of International Trade (Fujian CCPIT) and the New Zealand-China International Trade Promotion Council, with support from the Provincial Technology Market Association. Fu Jian, Vice Chairman of Fujian CCPIT, and He Zhiyun, Chairman of the New Zealand-China International Trade Promotion Council, attended and delivered speeches. Qi Huifang, Vice Chairman of the New Zealand-China International Trade Promotion Council, and representatives from more than ten New Zealand companies attended, along with Li Tangjie, head of the Fujian Provincial Technology Market Association, and representatives from Fujian enterprises.

Fu Jian said this year marks the 10th anniversary of President Xi Jinping's successful visit to New Zealand and the establishment of the China-New Zealand comprehensive strategic partnership. Fujian and New Zealand have close exchanges and a solid foundation for cooperation, he said. Fujian is a core area of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, and New Zealand was among the first countries to join the Belt and Road Initiative and is also an RCEP member.

The Fujian Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government attach great importance to strengthening practical cooperation in various fields through alignment with the Belt and Road and RCEP processes, and hope to establish a regular communication mechanism with New Zealand trade and investment promotion agencies and business associations, build cooperation and exchange platforms, and assist each other in organising trade and economic delegations for matchmaking activities. He Zhiyun agreed, highlighting New Zealand's investment opportunities, policies, competitive industries and distinctive projects, and said both sides should make full use of trade and investment opportunities under the Belt and Road and RCEP frameworks and continue to build a closer trade and economic partnership. At the meeting, Fujian CCPIT and the New Zealand-China International Trade Promotion Council signed a cooperation agreement.

During the company presentation session, representatives from several Fujian and New Zealand enterprises gave presentations and held in-depth discussions in the business matchmaking session.

Commentary

Trade and economic cooperation between Fujian and New Zealand is moving from traditional trade towards deeper industrial integration. When expanding in China, New Zealand small and medium-sized enterprises often face challenges such as fragmented channels and differences in local policies. Fujian, as a core area of the Maritime Silk Road, has a vibrant private economy and strong complementarities with New Zealand in sectors such as food processing, textiles and clothing, and building materials.

The cooperation agreement signed at this exchange meeting is expected to provide New Zealand companies with more direct matchmaking channels and reduce the hidden costs of entering the Fujian market. From an industry perspective, New Zealand's exports to China remain dominated by primary products such as dairy, timber and meat, but Fujian's manufacturing base can offer processing and value-added opportunities for New Zealand products—for example, combining New Zealand dairy ingredients with Fujian's food processing capacity to develop customised products for the southern China market. Meanwhile, under the RCEP framework, China-New Zealand tariff reduction arrangements already cover most goods, but many New Zealand SMEs have yet to fully utilise the rules of origin.

This matchmaking event may encourage more companies to leverage Fujian's ports and logistics networks to optimise their supply chain layouts. However, New Zealand companies should also note the intensity of competition in China's local markets. Fujian's local brands have advantages in cost-effectiveness and channel penetration, so relying solely on product imports may not be sustainable; deep cooperation with local partners should be considered.
