Summary

CCPIT Dongguan has written to enterprises inviting them to a Dongguan–Auckland Trade Matchmaking Exchange Meeting, set for the morning of 15 November (Sunday) at the National AI Application Pilot Base in Binhaiwan New Area. The council plans to bring a 12-member New Zealand business delegation attending the 2026 APEC CEO Summit to Dongguan for a trade and economic study tour, where delegates will hold face-to-face discussions with local firms on bilateral trade and investment opportunities. The programme includes a site visit to the base and a matchmaking seminar, with round-trip transport and a working lunch provided.

Target participants are companies in advanced manufacturing and supply chains, logistics and airport technology, AI and digital services, trade, investment and professional services, and any firm interested in connecting with the delegation. Registration closes before noon on 11 November (Wednesday), with participants required to scan a QR code to submit their details for coordinated preparations. Places are limited and confirmed participants will be notified separately by council staff.

Commentary

Dongguan, a major Chinese manufacturing hub, is worth a closer look for the complementarity between its advanced manufacturing, supply chain and AI sectors and New Zealand businesses. Organised by CCPIT Dongguan, the matchmaking event hosts the New Zealand business delegation attending the 2026 APEC CEO Summit and focuses on advanced manufacturing, logistics, AI and digital services, giving firms from both sides a direct platform for discussions. New Zealand SMEs have expertise in logistics technology, airport operations and digital services, while Dongguan offers clear advantages in manufacturing capacity and supply chain efficiency.

Cooperation between the two sides could help reduce cross-border trade costs. Notably, the Binhaiwan New Area in Dongguan is developing a National AI Application Pilot Base, a potential entry point for New Zealand AI companies into China's application market. However, New Zealand firms need to assess compliance requirements and localisation challenges in the Chinese market, particularly in data services and professional services.

Against the broader industry backdrop, the upgraded China–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement has increased openness in services trade and investment, but SMEs still need official matchmaking events like this to reduce information asymmetry. New Zealand companies interested in participating should study the delegation list in advance, identify where their technology or services align with Dongguan's industrial upgrading needs, and prepare specific cooperation proposals.
