China Scholarship Council extends online application deadline

Summary

The China Scholarship Council (CSC) has extended the online application window for its cooperative scholarship programme with 19 universities in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and adjusted the related timetable. Individual applications within the university close at 17:00 on 25 September 2026. Applicants must deliver the Application Form and the Unit Recommendation Form exported from the CSC system to Room 321, South Jinjiang Building.

The unit recommendation on the Unit Recommendation Form must be signed by the relevant school leader and stamped with the school's official seal, with the text sent in the body of an email to yjsyzhb@fzu. edu. cn under the subject line 'name + unit recommendation'.

Individual online applications close at 14:00 on 30 September 2026. Applicants must complete the national online application for state-sponsored overseas study and upload all materials, while separately contacting the host institution and preparing entry application materials in advance. The university's review and recommendation deadline is 16:00 on 13 October 2026.

The CSC will review applications in December 2026, confirm the list of scholarship recipients and publish the results. Other matters set out in the Selection Notice remain unchanged. The China Scholarship Council's extension of the online application window for its cooperative scholarship programme with 19 Australian, New Zealand and Canadian universities is aimed directly at current students at Fuzhou University, but for New Zealand small and medium-sized business owners it offers a window onto the China–New Zealand education services trade. New Zealand's international education sector is worth about NZ$5 billion a year, and Chinese students have long been one of the largest source groups. State-sponsored students are only a small fraction of that total, yet they cluster in fields where New Zealand has strengths, including agricultural technology, food science and environmental engineering.

A longer application period helps reduce applications lost to complex processes, but total places are unchanged, so the short-term boost to local spending should not be overstated. More significant is the long-term talent and technology connection: these state-sponsored postgraduate students are usually required to return home to work, which may in turn make them a bridge for later cooperation between Chinese and New Zealand firms. New Zealand SMEs could approach departments at partner universities such as the University of Auckland and Lincoln University to learn about the research directions of admitted students, and prepare Chinese-language internships or business matchmaking in advance.

With results announced in December, just two months before the February 2027 intake, accommodation, hospitality and retail businesses will need to respond quickly. The micro-level timing change reflects China's continued investment in international education exchange, but New Zealand SMEs should treat it as a precise talent lead rather than a signal of large-scale visitor flows.
