Summary

China's softwood log trade remains highly concentrated, with radiata pine the dominant species at 74% of total softwood log imports. More than 98% of that volume originates in New Zealand. The species is widely used in construction formwork, packaging and furniture substrates, making it the most liquid and influential basic timber on the market.

By contrast, supply of European spruce and fir continues to shrink, with imports down sharply by 34%–47% year on year, reflecting the fading of pest-affected timber and recovering European domestic demand. Demand for structural timber such as Douglas fir and hemlock is relatively firm, driven mainly by heavy infrastructure, bridges and timber structure projects, and those grades show milder price fluctuations and greater stability. Across the annual cycle, the softwood market follows a pattern of spring peak, stable autumn and winter lull.

March–June is the traditional construction season, September–October brings a smaller year-end rush peak, and demand falls to a trough in winter and around Chinese New Year. That seasonal rhythm weighs heavily on port inventories and spot prices.

Commentary

In China's softwood log import mix, radiata pine accounts for 74%, with more than 98% of that volume sourced from New Zealand. For New Zealand forestry exporters, that highly concentrated supply relationship is both a stable base and a source of risk exposure. Radiata pine is a core raw material for Chinese construction formwork, packaging and furniture substrates.

Zero-tariff access under the New Zealand-China free trade agreement gives it a stable cost advantage over Russian and European timber. The 34%–47% year-on-year decline in European spruce and fir imports is not, however, purely good news for New Zealand. Chinese importers are accelerating assessments of alternative sources, including Japanese cedar and Russian larch, in order to diversify supply risk.

New Zealand SMEs should note that Chinese softwood demand shows clear seasonality: a spring peak, a stable autumn and a winter lull. The March–June construction season and the September–October rush peak correspond with port inventory drawdown and firmer spot prices, while demand eases in winter and around Chinese New Year. Exporters should negotiate annual framework agreements with Chinese buyers and adjust shipping schedules to that seasonality, avoiding concentrated arrivals that cause demurrage and pressure for price cuts.

Chinese infrastructure and timber structure projects also generate relatively firm demand for structural timber such as Douglas fir and hemlock, a segment where New Zealand's supply share is low. New Zealand could, however, explore the use of high-grade radiata pine in engineered timber such as glulam and CLT (cross-laminated timber) to raise unit value. On the other hand, watch China's environmental restrictions on imported logs and the trend toward domestic plantation timber substitution; in the long term, radiata pine's absolute dominance may be challenged.

New Zealand SMEs should monitor Chinese property and infrastructure investment data, especially changes in new construction starts, which feed directly into fluctuations in radiata pine imports.

Summary in Chinese |

Commentary in Chinese |
