Li Qiang, Zhao Leji hold separate talks with Ecuador's President Noboa

Summary

Premier Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, met separately with Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa in Beijing on August 19. The year marks the 10th anniversary of the China-Ecuador comprehensive strategic partnership. Both sides expressed their willingness to deepen high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, implement the China-Ecuador Free Trade Agreement, and expand collaboration in trade, energy, mining, infrastructure, 5G and artificial intelligence.

Noboa said Ecuador is ready to work with China to reap the benefits of the free trade agreement and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields. Wu Zhenglong and Xiao Jie attended the respective meetings.

Commentary

For New Zealand small and medium-sized enterprise owners, the deepening China-Ecuador cooperation carries implications on two fronts. Firstly, Ecuador, the world's largest banana exporter and a major shrimp supplier, has gained expanded access to the Chinese market for its agricultural and food products since the China-Ecuador FTA took effect in 2024. This creates partial substitution for New Zealand's kiwifruit and seafood in China, particularly with lower-cost shrimp imports.

Secondly, China's investment in Ecuador's energy, mining and infrastructure will strengthen Latin American resource supply, potentially influencing global prices of copper, crude oil and other commodities, as well as shipping demand, which indirectly affects import costs for New Zealand. The cooperation in 5G and artificial intelligence also signals the penetration of Chinese technology standards into Latin America, prompting New Zealand tech companies eyeing regional expansion to assess compatibility. As China-Latin America trade volume continues to grow, New Zealand should further consolidate its differentiated position of high quality and traceability.
