Summary
The Jincheng Municipal Government Foreign Affairs Office said on 21 October 2026 that it had recently taken part in the 2026 China-New Zealand City Economic, Trade and Investment Cooperation Online Exchange, hosted by the New Zealand International Exchange Centre, holding online learning and matchmaking sessions with government and economic development agencies from the Waitomo District, Taranaki and the Great South region. The meeting discussed international exchanges between local governments, friendship-city development and investment promotion. Leaders from the Waitomo mayor's office, the Taranaki Regional Economic Development Agency and the Great South Development Agency gave presentations on local resources in new energy, livestock farming and tourism, and promoted practical economic, trade and cultural cooperation opportunities.
Waitomo's ecological tourism and wellness resort industries are mature and advanced, Taranaki has clear strengths in high-end livestock farming, green agriculture and clean energy, and the Great South has rich experience in ecological protection, region-wide tourism and nature-based wellness. Jincheng is advancing its '1349' strategic plan and focusing on developing advantageous industries including optoelectronics and precision machinery, cultural tourism and wellness, and the digital economy. The two sides have a solid foundation and broad potential for cooperation in clean energy, green and low-carbon development, cultural tourism and wellness, and youth study programmes.
The Foreign Affairs Office will set up regular contact, follow up on the outcomes of the exchange, share Jincheng's industrial resources and cooperation needs in a targeted way, and actively promote project matchmaking, cultural exchanges and the establishment of friendship-city ties.
Commentary
New Zealand's regional economies are actively seeking economic and trade links with Chinese cities. Waitomo, Taranaki and the Great South are respectively promoting ecological tourism, high-end livestock farming and clean energy, and region-wide tourism and wellness, areas that complement Jincheng's optoelectronics, cultural tourism and wellness, and digital economy industries. For New Zealand small and medium-sized enterprises, local government-led online exchanges of this kind often lower the initial barriers to entering Chinese regional markets, particularly in exporting clean energy technology and wellness services, where friendship-city channels can provide access to local investment promotion resources.
However, Chinese local governments tend to favour cooperation on physical projects that generate jobs or tax revenue, so New Zealand firms offering only consulting or asset-light solutions may find it harder to get projects off the ground. Taranaki's dairy and livestock technology has applications in northern China, but competition from local Chinese agricultural technology firms should be noted. Jincheng, a representative resource-based city in transition, needs precision manufacturing and automation equipment for its optoelectronics industry, and New Zealand SMEs could explore supplying high-value components or technical services rather than taking part directly in large-scale manufacturing.
Cooperation on youth study programmes has a lower threshold and could serve as an entry point for building trust.
