NZ EV & Tech Expo to offer real-world test drives and robots in Auckland

Summary

The inaugural NZ EV & Tech Expo will run from 13 to 15 November at Auckland Showgrounds, bringing the electric vehicle ecosystem together over three days to showcase vehicles, AI, robotics, smart technology, green energy and EV finance support. Visitors can book 15- to 20-minute test drives with exhibiting brands along a dedicated route beside Auckland Showgrounds. Confirmed test-drive brands include Geely, Tesla, BYD, Kia, Toyota, Volvo, Polestar, Zeekr, Honda, Subaru, GWM, GAC, Denza, Leapmotor, Dongfeng and BAIC.

Expo founder and director Steven Lin said the event was created to help New Zealanders make sense of a fast-expanding EV market. 'New Zealanders have never had so much choice when considering an EV, and never has there been so much to understand,' he said. 'We created NZ EV & Tech Expo to get people out from behind their screens, into the driver's seat, comparing options side by side, with experts answering their questions in one place.

' Dr Ashwin Jaiswal, the expo's consulting director (AI, digital and technology strategy), is helping plan the seminar programme. 'Our talks and panel discussions cover everything from charging and battery safety to cost of ownership, finance and driver-assistance technology,' he said. The expo's supporting partner ERoad offers its Roadrunr service, which simplifies road user charge (RUC) management by showing EV owners their remaining RUC balance, estimating how long it will last and alerting them when the balance is low.

The expo will also feature Unitree humanoid robots, Pudu service robots, Hypershell wearable exoskeletons, as well as smart home technology, clean energy and emerging innovation demonstrations. Early-bird tickets are NZ$10 plus a booking fee until 1 November, and children under 16 enter free when accompanied by an adult. Test drives are included in the ticket price but spaces are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, and drivers must hold a full New Zealand driver licence.

Commentary

New Zealand's EV market is undergoing a structural shift. According to Motor Industry Association data, pure electric and plug-in hybrid models accounted for 24.3 percent of new vehicle registrations in September 2026, up sharply from 8.9 percent a year earlier, with one in two private vehicle purchases now a plug-in model. The inaugural NZ EV & Tech Expo brings together 17 brands including Geely, BYD and Tesla, offering test drives and expert Q&A, reflecting Chinese brands' accelerating push into the New Zealand market.

For local small and medium-sized enterprises, the spread of EVs means more than fleet renewal: it also involves changes in operating costs around charging infrastructure, fleet management and road user charge (RUC) compliance. ERoad's Roadrunr service already provides a solution for RUC management, showing that a supporting service ecosystem around EVs is taking shape. On another front, the expo's introduction of humanoid robots, exoskeletons and other frontier technology hints that automation and AI could gradually permeate logistics, retail and other sectors, and SMEs need to watch the potential impact of technology substitution on workforce structure and business processes.

Whether New Zealand's charging network can keep pace with vehicle growth, and fluctuations in used EV residual values, remain key variables affecting SME procurement decisions.
