Fonterra lifts milk price forecast midpoint by 25c to $9.75/kg

Fonterra lifts milk price forecast midpoint by 25c to .75/kg

Summary

Fonterra has raised the midpoint of its farmgate milk price forecast for the season by 25 cents to $9.75 per kilogram of milk solids, citing stronger demand for whole milk powder and skim milk powder. The co-operative narrowed its forecast range, lifting the lower bound from $8.50 to $9 and keeping the upper bound at $10.50. Chief executive Richard Allen said whole milk powder prices rose about 5 percent and skim milk powder prices about 7 percent over the last two Global Dairy Trade auctions, driven by sustained demand from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa and China.

Allen said that despite record milk collections, the season had started well and contracted sales levels at this point were also favourable, giving Fonterra a basis to raise its forecast and narrow the range. For organic milk, Fonterra lifted the midpoint of its forecast range from $14.30 to $15.25 per kilogram of milk solids, with a new range of $14.50 to $16, up from $13.30 to $15.30. Allen said Fonterra continues to monitor factors that could affect global dairy supply and demand, and its team will use its scale and flexibility to adapt to changes and maximise returns for farmers' milk.

Commentary

Fonterra, the world's largest dairy exporter, has raised its farmgate milk price forecast to $9.75 per kilogram of milk solids, a direct reflection of recovering global dairy demand. About 95 percent of New Zealand's dairy production is exported, with China its largest single market. The 5 percent and 7 percent price gains for whole milk powder and skim milk powder respectively on the GDT platform were driven mainly by demand from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa and China.

For small and medium-sized NZ business owners, Fonterra's higher farmgate price means rising input costs, but it also sends a market signal: global dairy inventories are tightening and prices are entering an upcycle. Smaller dairy processors could look to higher-value products such as organic milk, where the forecast midpoint was raised to $15.25, a significant premium that points to potential in niche markets. However, they should watch for domestic milk supply expansion in China and competition from Australian dairy products.

New Zealand companies should move faster to build differentiated advantages in functional dairy and grass-fed certification. Fonterra's narrowed forecast range of $9 to $10.50 shows greater confidence in its market view, but geopolitical and exchange-rate volatility remain risks.
