Commentary
The agreement between the Law School of China University of Political Science and Law and the Novatra (New Zealand) Institute of International and Common Law signals that China-New Zealand legal education cooperation has entered an institutionalised stage. New Zealand's common law tradition and mature legal research system will support cross-border practical training and academic exchange platforms for legal talent from both countries. For New Zealand small and medium-sized business owners, the Chinese legal community's emphasis on foreign-related rule of law suggests that demand for professional services such as dispute resolution and contract compliance in China-New Zealand economic and trade relations may grow.
Local law firms and legal consulting agencies can watch for cooperation opportunities with Chinese universities and law firms. A deeper understanding of New Zealand's common law system among Chinese legal talent will help reduce legal risks in bilateral investment and trade. The participation of Australian universities and law firms also shows that the Australia-New Zealand region is becoming an important node in China's foreign-related rule of law network.
New Zealand should leverage its common law advantages to seek a more favourable position in the Asia-Pacific legal education market.
