Commentary

The opening of Haier's Australia-New Zealand regional headquarters and Fisher & Paykel's global brand centre marks an upgrade in China-New Zealand economic and trade cooperation from traditional trade to higher-value industrial collaboration. Haier, a global leader in white goods, acquired New Zealand's iconic Fisher & Paykel brand in 2012 and has since integrated its high-end appliance technology and global channels. Establishing the Australia-New Zealand regional headquarters in Auckland not only strengthens Haier's operational hub in the South Pacific but also highlights New Zealand's appeal as a regional management centre for multinationals.

For New Zealand SMEs, deeper integration between Haier and Fisher & Paykel could bring opportunities for localising supply chains, including demand for supporting services such as high-end components, industrial design and IoT solutions. If Haier's global procurement system opens to local suppliers, it would lower the barrier for SMEs to enter the Chinese market. On the other hand, the arrival of a large multinational regional headquarters may intensify local competition for talent, especially in R&D and digital fields, requiring SMEs to plan ahead on talent retention.

Under the upgraded China-New Zealand free trade agreement, tariffs on home appliances have been reduced to zero, but non-tariff barriers such as energy efficiency standards and environmental regulations remain challenges. SMEs can draw on the compliance experience of leading companies like Haier to jointly explore third-party markets. The opening of Fisher & Paykel's global brand centre also reinforces New Zealand's image as a high-end manufacturing base, helping to lift the country's overall brand premium.
