Auckland EV & Tech Expo Offers Test Drives — and Robots

Summary

The inaugural NZ EV & Tech Expo runs from 13 to 15 November at Auckland Showgrounds, bringing the electric vehicle ecosystem together over three days to cover vehicles, artificial intelligence, robotics, smart technology, green energy and EV financing support. The expo offers 15- to 20-minute test drives, with confirmed brands including Geely, Tesla, BYD, Kia, Toyota, Volvo, Polestar, Zeekr, Honda, Subaru, GWM, GAC, Denza, Leapmotor, Dongfeng and BAIC. Founder and director Steven Lin said the event was created to help New Zealanders understand the rapidly expanding EV market.

"New Zealanders have never had so much choice when it comes to EVs, nor so much information to get their heads around," he said. Consulting director (AI, digital and technology strategy) Dr Ashwin Jaiswal is helping plan the seminar programme, with topics covering charging and battery safety, cost of ownership, financing and driver-assistance technology. Sessions will examine whether New Zealand's charging network can keep up with EV growth, the costs and considerations of buying a first or used EV, battery safety, and the role of solar and smart charging.

Supporting partner ERoad's Roadrunr service simplifies road user charge (RUC) management, showing EV owners their remaining RUC balance, estimating how long it will last and alerting them when the balance is low. The expo will also feature Unitree humanoid robots, Pudu service robots, Hypershell wearable exoskeletons, as well as smart home technology, clean energy and emerging innovation demonstrations. Dr Jaiswal said: "EVs are the starting point of the conversation, but not the end point.

As vehicles become more connected, AI and software are changing how we drive, interact with technology and use energy. " Lin said the expo's ultimate aim is to give visitors the confidence to make informed decisions about EVs and emerging technology. Early-bird tickets are NZ$10 plus a booking fee until 1 November, and children under 16 enter free when accompanied by an adult.

Test drives are included in the ticket price but spaces are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis; drivers must hold a full New Zealand driver licence. According to New Zealand Automobile Association data, battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles accounted for 24.3 percent of new vehicle registrations in September 2026, up from 8.9 percent a year earlier; one in every two private registrations that month was a plug-in vehicle.

Commentary

New Zealand's EV market is experiencing explosive growth, with battery electric and plug-in hybrid models accounting for 24.3 percent of new vehicle registrations in September 2026, and one in every two private purchases being a plug-in vehicle. The inaugural NZ EV & Tech Expo brings together test drives from 17 brands including Geely, Tesla and BYD, and introduces frontier technology such as humanoid robots and exoskeletons, reflecting the industry's shift from vehicle sales alone to an intelligent mobility ecosystem. For local small and medium-sized businesses, the expo is not only a platform for choosing vehicles but also reveals derivative commercial opportunities in charging infrastructure, fleet management and energy services.

ERoad's RUC management service already targets EV owners' compliance pain points, while whether the charging network can keep up with growth remains a key bottleneck. The collective appearance of Chinese brands such as BYD, Geely and Zeekr highlights their proactive stance in the New Zealand market, seizing share with pricing and intelligent features and putting pressure on traditional Japanese and Korean brands. SME owners involved in logistics or fleet operations should watch the maturity of electric commercial vehicles and charging solutions, and plan transition costs in advance.

Meanwhile, the robotics and smart home displays signal technology convergence, suggesting future retail and service industries may face automation upgrade needs. With tickets at just NZ$10 and test drives free, the expo is a low-cost opportunity to gain first-hand experience and industry insight.
