Summary
Sichuan University's New Zealand Alumni Association and the university's College of Literature held a partnership meeting at Sichuan University on 10 September 2026, chaired by Lei Li, deputy dean of the College of Literature. Zhang Xieyun, president of the Sichuan University New Zealand Alumni Association, and assistant to the president Jia Lu attended, along with Deng Jianping, deputy secretary-general of the Alumni Association, Chen Xi, deputy director of the College of Literature's party and administrative office, and Hu Yi, foreign affairs secretary. The two sides held in-depth discussions on China-New Zealand international cultural exchange, academic co-operation and talent development, reaching several co-operation agreements.
The College of Literature hosts an A+ rated Chinese language and literature discipline and runs Sichuan's only national-level Chinese language education base authorised by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council. The New Zealand Alumni Association is the university's officially recognised alumni hub for the South Pacific. The talks identified three co-operation tracks.
The first is talent exchange, with short-term student exchanges and teacher visits to be incorporated into the university's 'Dachuan Shijie' programme and the young talent overseas visiting scheme, using the alumni association to connect with receiving institutions at New Zealand universities. The second is academic and cultural co-operation, including joint research on ethnic customs and maritime culture, a joint Oceania international cultural academic forum, and deeper comparative China-New Zealand literature and cross-cultural exchange research. The third is building a long-term mechanism, with agreement to sign a college-level memorandum of understanding and to work progressively towards platforms such as a China-New Zealand International Cultural Exchange Centre.
Both sides said they would accelerate implementation of the co-operation initiatives, injecting new momentum into China-New Zealand people-to-people exchange and the university's international engagement.
Commentary
The partnership between Sichuan University's College of Literature and its New Zealand alumni association creates a new platform for China-New Zealand people-to-people exchange. As the host institution for an A+ rated Chinese language and literature discipline, the college has a national-level Chinese language education base, and its academic resources complement the alumni association's on-the-ground network in New Zealand. For NZ small and medium-sized business owners, this kind of university-alumni co-operation does not directly involve trade, but it may indirectly promote China-New Zealand cultural understanding and talent flows, laying a soft foundation for future commercial co-operation.
From an education industry perspective, New Zealand universities are competitive in international education. The student and teacher exchanges mentioned in this co-operation could bring potential customers to local education services, accommodation and tourism SMEs. At the same time, joint research on maritime culture and ethnic customs may create opportunities to develop cultural creative products and tourism routes.
However, the co-operation is still at the discussion stage, with timing and scale yet to be clarified, so businesses should not commit resources too early. It is worth watching the subsequent memorandum signing and progress on the China-New Zealand International Cultural Exchange Centre to assess the actual impact on the local cultural consumption market.

Commentary in Chinese |
