Summary
A debrief for the New Zealand China Friendship Society (NZCFS) Christchurch branch's student delegation to China was held in Christchurch on 24 September. Acting Consul-General Xu Haiyuan and Director Yin Ji of the bilateral division attended at the invitation of the organisers. Nearly 100 people took part, including former Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament and NZCFS honorary chairman Sir David Carter, NZCFS Christchurch branch honorary chairman Qiu Mingchun, and all the students and parent representatives from the delegation.
Acting Consul-General Xu congratulated the students on completing their visit, saying they had met and built friendships with Chinese peers of their own age through on-the-ground visits and had seen a real, multi-dimensional China for themselves. She encouraged them to take the trip as a new starting point, carry forward the Rewi Alley spirit, and contribute youthful energy to generations of friendship between New Zealand and China. The delegation was organised by Qiu Mingchun and included teachers and 20 students from St Andrew's College and St Bede's College.
Commentary
The debrief for the NZCFS Christchurch branch's student delegation to China may look like a grassroots cultural exchange, but it reflects a long-term effort to build China-New Zealand ties at the youth level. St Andrew's College and St Bede's College are well-known private schools in Christchurch, and many of their students come from middle-class or wealthier local families. How this group views China will directly shape how New Zealand's business and political circles approach China in the future.
From a commercial angle, such people-to-people exchanges create an indirect but important soft operating environment for New Zealand small and medium-sized enterprises. When more young New Zealanders experience Chinese urban infrastructure, digital payments and consumer markets first-hand, their willingness to accept and take part in New Zealand-China trade tends to rise markedly. If these students later join family businesses or start their own, they are more likely to see China as a priority market or source of supply.
On the other hand, the deep involvement of the Chinese Consulate-General in Christchurch shows Beijing is using local friendship society channels to strengthen ties with South Island communities. The South Island is a major centre for New Zealand agriculture, tourism and renewable energy, and dairy, meat and timber exports to China account for a significant share of its trade. Youth exchanges may not generate immediate orders, but they help ease some New Zealanders' concerns about trade with China and provide a public opinion foundation for SMEs to maintain a stable export environment.
It is worth noting that the Rewi Alley spirit was repeatedly emphasised. This New Zealander, a household name in China, was born in Christchurch. Through this historical figure, both sides have built an emotional connection at the local level that goes beyond pure commerce.
For South Island exporters who depend on the Chinese market, that connection may translate into smoother business communication and more tolerant regulatory attitudes. Of course, the effects of cultural exchange are hard to quantify and can be affected by political fluctuations between the two countries. But in the long run, sustained youth exchanges will cultivate a group of 'bridge' talents familiar with both countries, whose value in trade negotiations, market development and compliance management should not be underestimated.
