Consul-General Chen Shijie attends 2026 New Zealand International Building Industry Summit awards in Auckland

Summary

Consul-General Chen Shijie attended the 2026 New Zealand International Building Industry Summit awards ceremony in Auckland on 14 August. The event was hosted by the New Zealand Chinese Building Industry Association. New Zealand Finance Minister Willis, MPs Lu Nan and Williams, Auckland Mayor Brown, Deputy Mayor Simpson and more than 800 representatives from the Chinese and New Zealand construction industries attended.

In his address, Willis acknowledged the contribution Chinese New Zealanders make to the country's construction sector and the wider economy, and outlined the government's reform measures in building and infrastructure. Chen said he hoped the construction industries of both countries would pursue mutually beneficial cooperation that delivers for more people. Government and business figures from both sides said they were willing to add further positive momentum to the development of the bilateral relationship.

Commentary

New Zealand's construction industry generates about NZ$20 billion in annual output, and Chinese-owned builders hold a substantial share of it, with NZCBIA membership above 500. Willis's acknowledgement of Chinese contributions before more than 800 summit attendees, paired with an outline of government reforms, points to a potentially steadier policy environment for local small and medium-sized builders. On the supply chain side, deeper China-New Zealand construction cooperation should help stabilise prices and lead times for imported building materials, though NZD volatility and local compliance costs remain variables for margins.

At the same time, large Chinese contractors entering the local market could sharpen competition for SMEs in residential and subcontracting work. NZ SMEs would do well to watch for SME subcontracting quotas in government infrastructure projects, and to build direct procurement relationships with Chinese suppliers to hedge costs.
