Summary
Chinese Ambassador to New Zealand Wang Xiaolong told an Auckland business APEC breakfast meeting that China, as APEC 2026 host, will centre on the theme 'Building an Asia-Pacific Community for Shared Prosperity' and pursue three priorities: openness,
innovation and cooperation. These include advancing the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific and developing an upgraded connectivity blueprint. It will be China's third time hosting APEC, after 2001 and 2014, with preparatory work well under way.
Commentary
China's APEC 2026 host year is set to drive progress on the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific, upgraded connectivity and digital trade consensus. For New Zealand SMEs, deeper regional liberalisation could further reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers to exports in China and the wider Asia-Pacific. Dairy, meat and other agricultural products already benefit from the upgraded NZ-China FTA, and APEC-driven trade facilitation may speed customs clearance and mutual recognition of standards.
Meanwhile, smart customs and an upgraded APEC Business Travel Card could directly cut business travel and logistics time costs. However, APEC initiatives are largely non-binding, and actual gains depend on member economies' implementation. In digital trade rule discussions, New Zealand will need to balance open data flows with local privacy regulations, and SMEs may face compliance adjustments.
If the Shenzhen Declaration can reach consensus on the environmental goods list, it would open Asia-Pacific government procurement markets for New Zealand clean-tech firms, though competition would also intensify.
