JD Health, Manuka Health deepen partnership with multi-format trial packs to lower barrier

Summary

New Zealand manuka honey brand Manuka Health and JD Health announced a deepened partnership on 2 November, with the two parties set to strengthen collaboration on stable supply, quality standards, product innovation and user operations. They plan to supply a total of 1 million bottles of manuka honey over the next five years and jointly develop a wider range of product specifications and trial-pack products. Under the agreement, the two parties will co-develop trial packs in multiple specifications and at multiple price points alongside regular products, using more competitive pricing and more flexible formats to lower the barrier for first-time consumers.

Manuka Health will ensure product quality, grade and origin meet agreed standards, while JD Health will leverage its platform capabilities in quality control, traceability and operations to handle product listing, promotion and user experience services. Manuka Health specialises in New Zealand-origin imported manuka honey, labelled under both MGO and UMF grading systems, with its products using the MGO grading system and holding New Zealand origin certification. Aligning with JD Health's 'Health Gold Selection' criteria across five dimensions — authenticity, sufficiency, purity, verification and labelling — the two parties will further strengthen the presentation of information on ingredient sourcing, grade labelling and quality testing.

Several Manuka Health products are already included in the 'Health Gold Selection' programme. Chris Parker, President of Manuka Health Asia-Pacific, said he looks forward to using the five-year partnership as a new starting point to continue providing JD users with manuka honey products of clear origin and well-defined grade. A head of JD Health's medicinal and food homology business said the partnership is not only an expansion of supply volume but also a systematic collaboration spanning quality standards, supply structure and user operations.

Commentary

Manuka honey is one of New Zealand's most recognisable agricultural exports, with a global market of about NZ$500 million, and China is its fastest-growing market. Manuka Health, one of New Zealand's three major manuka honey brands, has reached a five-year agreement with JD Health for a stable supply of 1 million bottles and will jointly develop multi-format trial packs. The partnership reflects continued Chinese consumer demand for natural functional foods and also mirrors the evolution of cross-border e-commerce channels.

For NZ SMEs, the move offers at least two lessons. On one hand, lowering the trial barrier through platform partnerships helps expand category penetration, but there is a risk that price competition could dilute manuka honey's premium positioning. On the other hand, JD Health's emphasis on quality control and traceability under 'Health Gold Selection' signals tighter scrutiny in the Chinese market, meaning smaller brands seeking entry must be transparent and compliant on MGO grades, origin certification and related requirements.

It is worth noting that the manuka honey industry has long faced issues of counterfeits and grade confusion. New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries has issued a scientific definition, but low-quality products remain common in the Chinese market. The deep alignment between Manuka Health and JD may help drive industry standards on online channels, but could also squeeze the space for smaller brands.

For NZ businesses reliant on daigou or small-scale exports, it is worth paying attention to platform traffic rules and consumer education costs, and to consider partnering with channels that have already built trust rather than going it alone.
