Summary
This study measures bilateral trade efficiency and potential in China's agricultural imports from New Zealand. Drawing on academic literature indexed in the Wanfang Data knowledge service platform and using quantitative methods including a trade gravity model, it analyses the current state, structure and drivers of agricultural trade between the two countries. The research finds strong complementarity in China-New Zealand agricultural trade, with China's imports of New Zealand dairy products, meat and forestry products continuing to expand.
However, trade efficiency has yet to reach its optimal level, leaving room to unlock further trade potential. Based on empirical estimates of bilateral trade efficiency coefficients and potential values, the study proposes policy measures including optimising trade structure, reducing trade barriers and improving customs clearance facilitation.
Commentary
Research on trade efficiency and potential in China's agricultural imports from New Zealand shows strong bilateral complementarity, yet efficiency remains below optimal. New Zealand dairy, meat and forestry products hold significant positions in the Chinese market, and companies such as Fonterra are already deeply embedded in Chinese supply chains. However, trade efficiency coefficients indicate room for improvement, constrained mainly by non-tariff barriers and customs clearance efficiency.
For NZ SMEs, this means that under the existing FTA framework, they can look to growing demand in China's tier-two and tier-three cities for high-value dairy products and premium meat. At the same time, China is pushing to diversify agricultural import sources, and New Zealand must contend with competition from Australia and the EU. Firms are advised to use digital trade platforms to shorten supply chains and to monitor changes in China's cold-chain logistics standards.
If the study's recommendations on lowering trade barriers are implemented, small and medium-sized exporters stand to benefit, though uncertainty remains over China's domestic agricultural protection policies.

Summary in Chinese |
Commentary in Chinese |
