Summary

Experts from New Zealand and Indonesia visited the Experimental Centre of Tropical Forestry on 21-22 September for a project exchange under the China-New Zealand Joint Laboratory on Forest Ecosystems and Climate Change. The delegation included Dean Francis Meason, a researcher at New Zealand's Bioeconomy Science Institute, and Winda Utami Putri, a junior researcher at Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency. At the exchange, Meason, Putri and Chen Lin, an associate researcher at the centre, gave academic presentations on 'Integration of Forest Streamflow Data', 'Soil Seed Banks of Invasive Alien Species' and 'Simulating the Effects of Drought on the Resilience of Castanopsis hystrix and Pinus massoniana Plantations', respectively.

Participants discussed the impacts of climate change on forest carbon sequestration and soil moisture. The delegation also conducted field visits to the centre's demonstration forests for multi-functional near-natural management of large-diameter precious tree species, under-forest economy demonstration forests, the national long-term scientific experimental platform, the karst arboretum and the science and technology exhibition hall. All parties expressed the hope to deepen mutual visits and exchanges, share the latest research results, strengthen collaborative research on enhancing forest ecosystem functions, and explore innovative models for raising the level of forestry science and technology.

Commentary

The involvement of New Zealand's Bioeconomy Science Institute in the China-New Zealand Joint Laboratory on Forest Ecosystems highlights forestry carbon sinks and sustainable management as a new fulcrum for China-NZ cooperation. Against the backdrop of an expanding global carbon market, research on forest carbon sequestration data integration and drought resilience is directly linked to carbon credit measurement and risk management. New Zealand's technical expertise in forestry carbon accounting and near-natural management can be converted into service exports.

For NZ SMEs, China's precious tree species cultivation and under-forest economy models offer niche opportunities in seedlings, monitoring equipment and consulting services, though they need to watch for competition from Chinese research institutions that are rapidly catching up. Indonesia's participation signals rising demand for tropical forestry technology. New Zealand firms can leverage the joint laboratory network to expand into Southeast Asian markets, focusing on building differentiated advantages in data standardisation and climate-adaptive tree species breeding.

Commentary in Chinese |
