Media urged to back Asia-Pacific community of shared future

Summary

The Asia-Pacific Media Forum was held in Shenzhen, Guangdong on September 5 as part of APEC's China Year activities. Delegates exchanged views on the theme 'Building a Shared Future for the Asia-Pacific Community: Consensus and Actions of the Media', covering open cooperation and innovation, digital, intelligent and green transformation, and people-to-people exchanges. The forum drew on President Xi Jinping's proposal for building an Asia-Pacific community.

A preparatory committee for the Asia-Pacific Media Partnership Programme was announced at the forum. Aman Haq, Director of International Relations at Pakistan Television, said a visit to BYD's facilities felt like 'being in a world of the future'. John Wallace, Executive Director of the Australian Centre for Asia-Pacific News, called on Western media to report on China objectively.

The 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting is scheduled to take place in Shenzhen in just over two months.

Commentary

The forum's emphasis on digital and green transformation holds particular relevance for New Zealand small and medium-sized enterprises. The Nansha cold-chain logistics cluster is improving China's fresh food distribution efficiency, providing smaller dairy and horticulture exporters with the infrastructure to reach South China consumers directly through cross-border e-commerce. With about 95 percent of New Zealand's dairy output exported and China its largest single market, any reduction in cold-chain costs is critical for margin-sensitive SMEs.

Meanwhile, the push for objective reporting on China's supply-chain innovation, combined with potential mutual recognition of green standards at the APEC Shenzhen meeting, could reduce duplicate testing costs for New Zealand organic products. However, greater media collaboration may also amplify the reach of Chinese digital platforms, and local service providers will need to carve out niche roles in regional content distribution. As the APEC leaders' meeting in Shenzhen approaches, New Zealand exporters should watch for new regional trade facilitation measures.
