Commentary
President Xi Jinping's SCO summit attendance and bilateral visits may not directly involve New Zealand, but the bloc's 27 member states account for nearly half the world's population and a quarter of global GDP. Its deepening cooperation is reshaping Eurasian supply chains, and New Zealand SMEs should watch for spillover effects. The China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, billed as a 'major transportation artery,' together with the new port economic cooperation center, is set to boost China's overland multimodal links to the Middle East and Europe.
For New Zealand's dairy and meat exporters, traditional sea routes will not be easily replaced, but higher-value goods might shift to faster land corridors, particularly for the European market. The expanded China-Egypt local currency swap reduces bilateral exchange-rate risk and hints at cheaper RMB settlement options for New Zealand firms active in China or Egypt. On the upside, the SCO's 100 science and technology projects and infrastructure investment could open doors in areas where New Zealand excels, such as agritech, cold-chain logistics and education services.
On the downside, stronger regional integration may deepen direct Sino-Central Asian and Middle Eastern trade, squeezing New Zealand's dairy market share there. Egypt's strategic position on the Suez Canal means closer ties with China could influence logistics pricing and reliability, so exporters should reassess route risks. Among SCO members, Russia and In

Commentary in Chinese |
