Wang Huning Meets US Delegation at Third China-US 1.5-Track Dialogue

Summary

Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, met with US representatives in Beijing on August 24, 2026, during the third China-US 1.5-track dialogue. He said China is willing to work with the United States to implement the common understandings of the two heads of state, enhance mutual understanding, respect core interests, strengthen practical cooperation, properly manage differences, and build a constructive and strategically stable China-US relationship. The US side agreed to jointly implement the consensus on building such a relationship, promote business cooperation, enhance people-to-people exchanges, and prevent risks related to artificial intelligence.

Zhou Qiang and Wang Dongfeng attended the meeting.

Commentary

The stability signals from the China-US 1.5-track dialogue carry dual implications for small and medium-sized enterprise owners in New Zealand. On one hand, if the two countries implement the leaders' consensus and manage differences, global trade policy uncertainty would decrease. As an export-dependent economy, New Zealand's commodity exporters of dairy, timber and other goods could avoid shipping cost volatility and demand contraction caused by an escalation of the tariff war between China and the US.

On the other hand, the US side's explicit mention of preventing AI risks suggests that the two countries may strengthen coordination on rules such as AI governance and cross-border data flows. New Zealand's technology and services companies need to monitor the compliance cost changes arising from the convergence or divergence of technical standards between the two countries. With bilateral trade between China and the US still exceeding US$600 billion, any easing will transmit through commodity prices and global supply chains to the South Pacific.

New Zealand SMEs should track rule adjustments in intermediate goods trade between China and the US, such as semiconductors and clean energy, and assess their own supply chain compliance risks and alternative market opportunities in advance.
